The reason why Russells.

I became involved in Russells as far back as 1983 when I bought my first Russell from the UK from Mr Jeff Luscot of the famous "Jalus Kennels"

Once involved in the breed, I became an adict and went on to breed Parson Russells in a small way. I love their caracter and beauty and admire that these little dogs are part of a hunting history that now in the UK is dying out because of the ban on foxhunting. The terrier is still used though and I believe will live through this bad momment in the UK hunting history.

It has a strong breed club that is dedicated to preserving the dog in its original form. I am an active member of the PRTCGB and also member of the Belgian CRBT a  club for terriers in Belgium.

I will now introduce you to my dogs starting with the oldest right down to the youngest members of the family "Hotspot and Happy Hanna"

The Parson Russell Terrier's Behavior

Recommended for: pet, working dog

The Parson Russell Terrier dog breed is essentially a Jack Russell Terrier except for a few phsyical differences. Jack Russell Terriers are known for their tendency to be extremely energetic and active. They generally need lots of exercise, and may become hard to deal with, even aggressive, if they are forced to be sedentary. There has been a problem with Jack Russell Terriers in general being abandoned by families who did not manage to keep up with them.

Remember that breed only provides a general clue as to any individual dog's actual behavior. Make sure to get to know dogs well before bringing them into a family environment .

The Parson Russell Terrier's Physical Characteristics

Here are some of the characteristics of the Parson Russell Terrier breed as determined by the American Kennel Club's published breed standard. This standard is quite like the UK and FCI standard.

  • Size: males: 14 inches; females: 13 inches
  • Coat: either "smooth" or "broken," both coats being double, shiny, harsh, close, dense, and straight
  • Color: white, white with black markings or white and black tri-color
  • Eyes: almond-shaped, dark, moderately sized, with dark rims except for white dogs
  • Ears: small, v-shaped, "drop" ears, moderately thick
  • Muzzle: rectangular
  • Nose: black

The Parson Russell Terrier's Origins and History

Source: Wikipedia.

Country/Region of Origin: United Kingdom

Original purpose: fox hunting, showdog

Name: "Russell" from John "Jack" Rusell, who preferred Jack Russell Terriers. The name "Parson Jack Russell Terrier" had been trademarked, so the American Kennel Club avoided using the name "Parson," relenting in 2003.

Historical notes: The Parson Russell Terrier breed was the first variant of the Jack Russell Terrier to be recognized by the Kennel Club (UK), which happened in 1990. Like the other Russell Terriers, the Parson Russell Terriers are descended from fox terriers and are named for John "Jack" Russell, who preferred this kind of breed. This very new breed of dog and is still evolving

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR ALL

1/ Buying a dog is an important decision, DO not fall foul to animal pet shops where you fall in love with a cute puppy in the window. Please reseach the breed you are interested in talk to breeders ( preferably those that breed within the SRSH Belgian Kennel Club)

2/ Dogs bought with NO pedigree and for enourmous sums just gives these unscrupulous persons money. If you want a dog either adopt a rescue dog or go to a reputable breeder who follows and abides by the rules of the KC.

3/ Make sure the dog has been identified, and has been wormed and vacinated at least with its first vacinations.

NO DOG should be sold without a pet passport, ie a little blue book with all its particulars in. ie--- NO BOOK no sale. No identification-- NO sale. No vacination ---No sale.

See where the pups were brought up, in a kennel or family environment. Is it well socialised? Does it look healthy? Does it look TOO young to leave its dam?

4/ DONT BE SCARED TO ASK QUESTIONS and get  answers that give you confidence.
